Cy and the Lakers No Hit Pedro's Runners
Denton True Young, you may know him better by his award, tossed the 2008 Municipal League's First No Hitter.
It was a match up for the ages: Pedro Martinez of the Jack Rabbit Runners v. Cy Young of the Pequot Lakers at Colt Stadium, April 22, 2008. Both pitchers were masterful with Pedro scattering five hits over 8 innings holding the home town faithful without a run.
Matching and exceeding - Cy cut through the Runners giving up only a walk in the fourth to Hank Gowdy, and hitting Buck Herzog at the plate, no doubt retaliating for Pedro plunking battery mate Jason Kendall.
In the top of the 9th, the Cyclone induced Herzog to ground out to first and earned his 5th and 6th strikeout by sitting down Buck Ewing, then Hank Gowdy. Cy at 111 pitches seemed to pick up steam in the 9th, thus avoiding the temptation for the home team to pull him in the 10th.
However, Frank Homerun Baker, made that point moot, as he took a 2-2 pitch from Pedro over the fence in right, sealing the no hitter.
