Gahanna Small Ball…We’re gonna need a bigger boat.
If Yankee Stadium is the House Ruth built, then AT&T Park, home of the 2008 Gahanna Squad is the Home Built for Barry. With right field just 309 feet away, the park is a dream for left-handed pull hitters. At that distance, even the 20 foot fence isn’t that imposing. Has anyone noticed that Griffey, Barry, and Gehrig are all left-handed pulling power hitters? Thought so. As I think of the fans in the water at McCovey Cove I’m reminded of the line from the film Jaws…”We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
What could work: Visitors should put all the outfielders in right when Griffey, Barry and Lou come to bat. Fans will get their moneys worth. Roberto Clemente should shine with this collection. The middle infielders are a collection of quality fielders and some good slap hitters. Simply put, this team will score a bunch of runs. On the pitching side, Doc Gooden and Jason Schmidt will win plenty of games. Goose Gossage will close the door and save a boatload of games.
What could fail: They’ll score a lot…they’ll give up a lot. This team could have the highest ERA of the league. Doc is good, and will strike out plenty. Denny McLain could have a big year. Floyd Bannister is good, but like the others, suffers a high ERA. And Lazarus Barber might have as good a second half as a first half…or not. Lots of million dollar men that the team is counting on.
Result: 84-78. A number of 10-8 final scores are in the works. Hopefully for Small Ball they’ll get more of the 10s.
Editors Note: After the penning of this preview, the Gahanna Small Ball released Ken Griffey Jr. and signed Willie Mays.

Looks like you are right. It would be nice to get a home game. 1-7 away from the Friendly confines hurts a bit.
