You can own Johan Santana, and he will not cost you what he costs the Mets.
New and improved talent has arrived. Would You? Could you? Be tempted to drop your entire roster to ensure that you have a shot at the new talent? One major point, the new talent is not overpriced, in fact it looks discounted. Is Johan Santana, Cy Young Winner, a guy who quickly matured right in front of your eyes be worth it all? Nine Million Dollars, only, you know he could go quick. Or say you've had a jones for the Cubbies. Carlos Zambrano $6 million. Thats the price of a third or fourth starter, not an Ace! Or how about a choice of Webb, Peavy or Halladay for $7 million each or last seasons AL Cy Young Award Winner - CC for $3 million - are you kiddling me?
Bats? You've got some bats. Fat Albert Puljos, just check those numbers. They're among the greatest of all time. Plus he plays well at 1B, 3B, Lf or Rf. Berkman, switch hitting Lance Berkman may be the next addition to Schwalbe's stable of switchers. Or you may be able to claim your four keepers and still add to some new talent. Ichiro leading off for the Monroes? At $6 mil, how many runs will he score sitting in front of Ruth and DiMaggio? Or how many times will Adam Dunn ($6) go deep hitting behind Barry Bonds? Twins fan? Nathan ($9) shutting the door or Hunter ($4) patroling centerfield. Need a thief - Carl Crawford (3). Jay - If you're tired of Tejada why not add Jimmy Rollins ($3) and Brian Roberts ($2).
Decisions, Decisions. 2006's Champion dropped his entire roster and only finished 3rd in his division, so it is a risk. But is second place any worse than 10th place? Would you risk it all to be a Municipal League Champ? Do you need to blow up the roster or just add a piece? Do you have to decline all of your keeper slots or one or two? 2009 is approaching fast.
Ready set go!
