Observation Lucky Seven

The Median Pitcher

In analyzing drafting order and estimating when you guy(s) will end up going, it is a good idea to understand the lay of the land.

As for starting pitchers the median starter would be 1960's Bob Buhl.  Bob had pitched 238 innings with an ERA of 3.09.   As for relievers 1988's Tom "Flash Gordon" epitomized the median closer.  Tom tossed 80 innings with a 2.72 ERA.

But with well over 500 starting pitchers, should we be viewing Bob Buhl as the median for our planning?  Maybe not.   At most the twenty municipal league teams will employ six starting pitchers.  This would mean that we should look at the median pitcher of a smaller set of players, say 120 (20 teams times 6 starters).  Based on these assumptions, 1964's Don Drysdale represents the median starting pitcher.  He tossed 321 innings with a 2.19 ERA.   Not too bad for a number 3 starter.
