In preparation for 2008, the Municipal League has drastically altered its salary cap plan. You will now have 100 Million Dollars from day one. Unlike 2007 there will be no in season expansion of the cap. But your 2008 dollars will not stretch as far as you may think. Dollar for dollar it might not even have the same purchasing power as your $83 million did in 2007.
Why? You will be getting squeezed at both ends. At the bottom end, there will be no more $250,000, or $500,000, or $750,000 players. All of those players are at a minimum of $1,000,000. At the top end the MVP type players salaries have also been inflated.
So how will that effect me? The Municipal League Champion Minneapolis Millers would inflate from $83 million to $126 million. Bonds (17), Cobb (16), Martinez (17) and Saberhagen (10) all saw increases. In fact these four players would take up 60% of the payroll. At the bottom end, seven players that were under a million are now inflated to a million.
Geez, won't all teams now be inferior with the inflated salaries? No. Most will have to do some roster tinkering, but with the addition of 600 additional players to the pool, there are many more quality options. Also a majority of those new players are in the $1 to $3 million dollar range.
