Big Week For FM Twins Neil Fletcher

Congratulations to Neil Fletcher. First he secures the Number One Pick in the 2009 Municipal League draft (I think this was secured about a month ago). And more importantly, his number one offspring Matt brings more honor to the family name.

ST. PAUL, MINN.: Southwest Minnesota State University senior guard Matt Fletcher has been named second team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The announcement came today from the conference office in St. Paul, Minn.

It’s the third straight season that Fletcher has earned second team accolades. Fletcher becomes the first SMSU player to be named either first or second team all-conference three straight seasons since Andre Beasley (1st, ‘91, 2nd, ‘92, 2nd, ‘93).

Fletcher, 6-foot-3, native of North Branch, Minn., (geez the NB Vikings sure could have used him this year) is averaging a team-high 14 points per game and leads the team with 78 three-point field goals. He is shooting 42.3 percent (115 of 271) from the field, 41.3 percent from three-point range (78 of 189) and 87.3 percent (69 of 79) from the free throw line. He also has dished out 55 assists, recorded 23 steals and is averaging 3.7 rebounds per game.

In conference games only (18 games), Fletcher finished second in the league in free throw percentage (88.9), second in three-point field goals made per game (2.61), seventh in scoring (13.8) and 14th in three-point field goal percentage (41.2).

Fletcher, who has appeared in 116 career games ranking tied for fourth in school history, also ranks first in the school record book for three-point field goals made (301), three-point field goal percentage (44.8, 301 of 672) and free throw percentage (85.7, 197 of 230). He is also sixth all-time in scoring (1,358) and eighth in assists (234).

Southwest Minnesota State, currently ranked No. 9 in the latest NCAA regional rankings, is 16-11 overall and finished third in the NSIC regular season standings with an 11-7 record. SMSU, the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NSIC tournament, will host No. 6 seed Upper Iowa on Saturday, Mar. 1 in the quarterfinals.

Hats off to Neil! Now with Matt graduating look out Municipal League, he's ready to put a hurtin' on.
