The rookie owner picked Citizens Bank Park (home of the 2008 MLB Phillies). At the first World Series game in the stadium last year, country music legend Tim McGraw spread the ashes of his father, Tug, on the pitchers mound. Tug recorded the final out for the 1980 ML Champion Phillies. A fitting end of this story would be if the Kickers picked Tug…they didn’t. Karma is big in baseball.
What could work: Spread the wealth. The Kickers didn’t bite on any big money players. No double digit income superstars on this squad, yet every starter is recognizable. Consider the infield of Killebrew, Biggio, Yount, and Brett. Gwynn, Puck, Lynn, and Foster patrolling the outfield. On paper, everything looks great for this lineup. They could lead the league in runs scored.
What could fail: Will a bunch of ordinary (relatively speaking) pitchers perform well enough? The names are known (Peavy, Sabathia, Drysdale, Black-Jack Morris), but how will they stack up in the Municipal League? Only two Hall of Fame pitchers (Drysdale and Fingers) are on the squad.
Result: 82 -80. The Kickers might have the highest ERA in the division, but they’ll score plenty of runs.
