The rookie owner is quite a talented musician. One has to wonder why he selected Candlestick as his home park. Day games were nice there, but night games were served up with a full complement of cold, wind, and fog. So why the ‘Stick? Easy. It was the site of the final Beatles concert.
What could work: It’s an odd-numbered year. In his first ten years in the majors, Bret Saberhagen only had winning records in odd numbered years. Throw in Johan, Hershiser, and Chuck Finley and the rotation is strong. Bob Wickman and Jose Mesa at the back end makes this a team with great arms. If Vlad, Clemente, and Ortiz have great years, watch out.
What could fail: Defense. While Castillo and Whitaker are great second basemen, they’re just million dollar babies in this league. Ortiz may have to play everyday at first. The swirling winds of Candlestick can help Ortiz, but right-handed power hitters (which the Lindys have some good ones) will struggle.
Result: 76-86. Charlie Hough, a knuckleballer in windy Candlestick, might set the league record for walks. If this season ends up being “the year of the pitcher,” then reverse this prediction.
