Gil McDougald, infielder for the 2009 Millers is probably one of the most under appreciated big leaguers. He is the only player in MLB who won Gold Gloves at third, short, and second. He could also hit, just not at his home field of Yankee Stadium, which was not good for righties at that time. He was also a heck of a nice guy. After bashing Herb Score with a liner to his face, McDougald said if Herb could never play again, neither would he.
What could work: A Municipal League, Fenway version of Murder’s Row. Consider; Lou Gehrig, Harry Heilmann, Duke Snider, Mel Ott, Frank Robinson, and Roger Conner. This team will score runs in bunches. All this in the friendly confines of Fenway Park. The starting lineup should lead the league in doubles.
What could fail: The other hitters after those just mentioned. No pure leadoff hitter. Generally Fenway plays better to right-handed power hitters than left-handed power hitters. Gehrig, Connor, Ott, and Snider all swing from the left. Only a quarter of the salary cap was spent on pitching.
Result: 81-81. Only $26 million spent on pitching? If this squad experiences a winning record no pitcher valued over $5 million will be picked in the draft next year.
