Bonds, Medwick, Daulton, Haines and Plunk are gone. Willie McCovey, Mike Piazza, Rusy Greer, Randall Myers and Danny Darwin have replaced them. Has the Small ball manager gone off his rocker by releasing his two best hitters (Bonds and Medwick) at the 48 game point. Bonds and his .275 average, 18 homers and 46 RBI's sit at the bottom of McCovey Cove.
Wait, there is some help on the way... Adding Piazza (who statistically speaking is a monster at Shea), and McCovey (who has emerged from McCovey cove much like Godzilla), who has almost as much HR power as Bonds could be enough to put some pressure on the highflying Millers. The addition of Piazza and his RH power bat help Small Ball's chances of the Long Ball at Shea and Fenway. Is this a knee jerk move to get into the Wildcard position or to overtake Mr. Moose? You betcha!!! The Saints are currently the Wildcard team and did not make any major moves; this will prove tobe costly. Small Ball wasn't ready to sit back and wait for productions from underperforming players. A shake-up was necessary in clubhouse and now the Bonds cancer has been removed.
This was clearly an offense at the expense of defense move for the Small Ballers. It is the first time SID has had a chance to be in the American league and I can tell you that defense is definitely overrated in the AL. Hang on tight, the fun is just beginning. The Millers have only played Small Ball one series so far (losing two of three to Sid I might add) this year; there is plenty of time to make up the current deficit.
Can you say Willie Cubed (Mays, McCovey and Randolph) Get used to it.
Love Sid
